Shōshin Nagamine ( Nagamine Shōshin, 15 July, 1907 – 2 November, 1997) was a Japanese author, soldier, police officer and karate master.
The art of Matsubayashi-Ryu was founded in 1947 by O'Sensei Shoshin Nagamine.
Sensei Nagamine named his style in honor of the two masters whom he viewed as the most important masters that his teachings were based upon, Sōkon Matsumura of Shuri-te, and Kosaku Matsumora of Tomari-te. He chose to name the school using the first kanji characters from both master's names Matsu and the style is pronounced in Japanese "Matsubayashi".
Master Shoshin Nagamine received instruction from three great teachers: Ankicki Arakaki, Chotoku Kyan and Choki Motobu. In turn, Master Kyan had been a student of master Sokon Matsumura of Shuri, and Master Motobu had stdied under Master Kosaku Matsumura of Tomari. Therefore, Matser Nagamine is the third instructor following both Matsumuras. Since his teachings are based on the ideas of these two great master he decided, in 1947, to adopt the name Matsubayashi-Ruy in honor of both Matsumuras, so that the names of these famous Karatemen are kept forever in our minds.

(Sensei) Katherine Loukopoulos
Sensei Katherine Loukopoulos studied karate in Manhattan with Zenko Heshiki Sensei. His teacher is Sensei Shoshin Nagamine, the founder of Matsubayashi Ryu. Shoshin Nagamine Sensei's teachers were some of karate's most respected names, forming part of the history of karate-do. Nagamine Sensei has written a book about karate. His book contains the history, philosophy, plus all the katas and techniques of our system (Matsubayashi Ryu). We always use the term 'Sensei' after the person's name to show that this is their title of respect. Thus, we say "Nagamine Sensei" or "Katherine Loukopoulos Sensei."
(Sensei) James Thompson
Sensei James Thompson is presently in change of the Bubishi Karate Dojo in United States.
Bubishi is a Chinese word that means 'martial art spirit', and the word 'dojo' comes from Sanskrit of ancient Idia and means 'place of enlightment'.
He has studied Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu with Katherine Loukopoulos-Sensei since 1980 and considers her his 'Sensei'. "Sensei" is the word used in Okinawa for martial art teacher -- someone who teaches 'the way' of Karate (Karate-do).
